An efficient Bismuth-based erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is demonstrated using adouble-pass configuration. The amplifier utilizes the double-propagation of the signal provided using an optical circulator at the output end of the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) and has obtained improved gain characteristics as compared to an amplifier of single-pass configuration. This amplifier provides again as high as 30 dB using 215 cm EDF pumped by two 1480 nm pump signals totaling 200 mW in power. In comparison to the singlepass configuration, this amplifier has gain enhancement of more than 9 dB from 1565 nm to 1600 nm wavelength. This proposed amplifier will play an important role in development of a compact EDFA that operates in the L-band region.
